About amanda...the backstory

I am a native of a small town in the Catskill Mountain region of New York. I grew up stomping through rivers and playing in and pondering nature. I recieved my Undergraduate Degree in Philosophy and Anthropology with a minor in Religious Studies from the State University of New York College at Oneonta. During my education I was exposed to and fell deeply in love with eastern thought and medicine.

I have always been interested in the natural world and have been driven to help others. After graduation, I moved to Rhode Island and spent time working as a farmer on organic vegetable and flower farms. In 2010, I began studying Western Herbalism in both clinical and shamanic traditions. I completed a 2 year apprenticeship with Sage Mauer at the Gaia School of Healing in Putney, Vermont. I also studied and worked with Mary Blue of Farmacy Herbs in Providence, RI.

Amanda and acupuncture: a love story

My exposure to Acupuncture began during my undergraduate education but it wasn't until my early twenties that I actually witnessed first hand the effectiveness of this medicine. It was during this time that I began suffering from a very nasty bout of eczema on my hands. It progressed to a point where I had difficulty bending my fingers and using my hands. It was painful and unsightly and it worsened my preexisting anxiety. I turned to Western Medicine, because that's what you do, right? I was prescribed various medications which all worked at first but as soon as the medication ran out, the eczema came back worse than before. Finally, I tried acupuncture. After a course of treatment, over 3 months, it went away. Through the process, I learned first hand, the power of being treated as a whole person. The power in shifting perspective, from treating just symptoms to treating the underlying imbalance had a an extreme impact on my understanding of what medicine is and what it should be. Since then, I have had the honor and privilege of seeing the effectiveness of this medicine on countless others. I am humbled, daily, by the beauty of this medicine.

It is my belief that healing is a journey. It is not a pill. It takes time. The process can be murky and it usually takes longer than we want it to, but it is worth it. It is worth it. You are worth it. Pain and illness can be annoying at best and devastating at worst, but within them is the invitation for growth and change. It is my desire to help, truly help, others move through this process with humor and compassion.
